Aberdeen, South Dakota was named for Aberdeen, Scotland, the native country of the president of Chicago, Milwaukee Railroad when the town was founded in 1881. At one time the railroad stockyards brought in trainloads of cattle, sheep, and hogs from the ranch country of western North and South Dakota and Montana. They were unloaded for rest, water, and feed on their way to packing centers farther east.
