Alexandria South Dakota was settled in 1879, named for Alexander Mitchell, the President of the Milwaukee railroad, and appointed the county seat of Hanson County. Originally settled by German and Swiss immigrants, the farm houses and buildings in the community reflect this ethnic background. With the arrival of five Discalced Carmelite Nuns from New York in August of 1997, Alexandria became the first cloistered Catholic community in South Dakota.
With the abundance of grain fields, today this is one of South Dakota’s prime pheasant hunting areas.
