Armour South Dakota was founded in 1901 when the railroad arrived and was named for Philip D. Armour, meat packer and railroad director. In acknowledgement of the courtesy, Armour purchased a bell for the town’s first church.
Today Armour is the Douglas County seat and remains a town with a busy Main Street business. The Douglas County Museum is housed here and has the honor of being on the National Register of Historic Sites. Armour has several homes in the area that are also on the National Register of Historic Sites.
Douglas County is prime pheasant hunting country that is well acknowledged by the pheasant hunters from all over the U.S. as they come into Armour and the surrounding towns each Fall.
