Avon was founded in 1900 by the Milwaukee Land Company and named for the postmaster’s old home town of Avon, New York. The first building was a saloon constructed with the news that the railroad was coming. Today Avon boasts of a house on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s privately owned, so no tours are offered, but the building is worth the two or three blocks off the main highway to see it.
