Belvidere South Dakota was never a large town and still today it is a small prairie town catering to the farms and ranches in the area.

Belvidere was founded in 1907 and named by the settlers for their hometown of Belvidere, Illinois.

South of town was the 30,000 acre cattle ranch of Tom Berry, South Dakota’s “Cowboy Governor”, who was in office from 1933-1937.

Belvidere has two convenience/gas stores, small locally owned restaurant and bar, campsite and motel for the traveler looking for a resting spot on their way west to the Badlands, Black Hills and Mount Rushmore.
