Brookings, South Dakota was named for Judge W.W. Brookings, an outstanding pioneer of the State, and was platted in 1879.

Fishing Tournament- January 16, 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. January 17, 10:00 Snowmobile Safety Course ages 7 and up. Children's Kitty Cat timed event ages 5-10 at 12:30 p.m. Family snowmobile ride at 2:00 p.m. Fireworks display at dark. January 18, Poinsett Pounders Snowmobile Club poker run. Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Event takes place at the Outskirts Lodge/ Lake Poinsett.

Living History Fair

The Living History Fair is a convention of Historical reenactors and history vendors. Friday is a schoolday where hundreds of students attend 20mm programs on a variety of historic topics. On Saturday and Sunday the event is open to the public for more programs as well as vendors selling historic clothing, equipment and supplies. This event takes place at the Swiftel Center in Brookings.

Thorburn/Buechel exhibition, A collection of Native American art and images

Reverend Frank Thorburn, an Episcopal priest and his wife moved to the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1931, where they served until 1952. The majority of the Thorburn collection is composed of gifts they received over the course of the 20 years. Eugene Buechel, an avid photographer, left the museum over 2,300 negatives and prints of the Rosebud and Pine Ridge residents during the middle of the 20th century.
