Castle Rock, South Dakota was named for a near-by butte in 1910 by Henry Jacobsen, a local rancher. The high, rocky sides of the butte gives it the appearance of an ancient castle.
Today, Castle Rock has joined the ghost town section of South Dakota history with a population of less than 10 people. Over 200 years ago huge herds of buffalo roamed this area of South Dakota, creating prime hunting grounds for the various nomad Indian tribes. Many land dominance battles ensued between the various tribes over the centuries, only later to unite against one common enemy, The White Man.
Listen closely and you can still hear the war cries and Cavalry bugles. The Castle Rock area is a history lover's paradise.
