Chamberlain, SD, started as a ferrying point for passengers and freight on the Missouri River. Its picturesque location on the eastern slope of the Missouri River Valley, with its numerous parks and recreational facilities combine to make it one of the most attractive towns along Interstate 90 heading west to the Black Hills or east to Mitchell or Sioux Falls. Chamberlain was actually founded in 1880 and named for a director of the railroad, Selah Chamberlain.
