WHOA! Slow down this is definitely one tiny town you don’t want to miss. Don’t let your eyes deceive you – this town has a lot of history. Dallas in the early 1900’s was a lot different than it is today. Like so many other towns in Gregory County, it was plotted in 1904 with the opening of the reservation land. Immediately, Dallas became the Mecca to the unsettled portions of the Rosebud Country. Dallas grew rapidly and became the registration center for over 50,000 homesteaders looking for land in Tripp County. In the early 1900’s, Dallas was one the largest cities in Gregory county. In 1919, several disastrous fires brought havoc to the town, along with drought, crop failures and dust storms. Dallas was almost destroyed when in 1923 another fire hit Main Street destroying two buildings and again in 1926 and 1927. By the time the Depression hit in the 1930’s there was only 500 souls left in town. Today, Dallas’s claim to fame is hunting season and the only city in the United States with the water tower in the middle of Main Street. The small city of Dallas’ population of a little over 100 expands to over thousands during the months of October and November when the wily pheasant is pursued.
