The oldest house in the Black Hills of South Dakota is located here in Fairburn, South Dakota. It is a log house located on French Creek. The Army built a fort at Fairburn in 1840 in an attempt to keep the gold prospectors out of the Lakota Sioux’s sacred grounds. That failing and the treaty broken, the town of Fairburn was platted in 1886 by the Pioneer Town Site Company.
