Fairburn, South Dakota lays claim to the oldest house in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The house is a log house located on French Creek. The Army built a fort at Fairburn in 1840 in an attempt to keep the gold prospectors out of the Lakota Sioux’s sacred grounds. When the Army failed to stop the prospectors and the treaty was broken, Fairburn was platted in 1886 by the Pioneer Town Site Company.

The old school house in Fairburn houses a very interesting western history museum. This area of Highway 79 vibrates with history of the old west and you can almost hear the echo of the Indian fights and shouts of GOLD
