Fort Pierre, South Dakota can claim that no other town in South Dakota has as many “firsts” as this quiet little town. Fort Pierre can claim to be the site of the first spot visited by white men on South Dakota soil due to verification by the Verendrye Plate. Joseph La Framboise, in 1817, marked the beginning of the oldest continuous settlement in the State with the establishment of a fort, near the town site of Fort Pierre. In 1880, the railroads came into Pierre and made Fort Pierre the starting point for freight outfits on their long overland trek to the Black Hills. It was also here that the river steamers unloaded their cargoes for the Black Hills haul.
With the rise and growth of Pierre, the importance of the older town has declined into a rambling, sleepy town filled with memories of voyageurs and trappers. For the western history buff this is a “must see” town.
