Fort Thompson, South Dakota is located on Highway 34, and is an administrative headquarters for the Crow Creek Indian Reservation that was established in 1863.
Fort Thompson was named for Clark W. Thompson, who was superintendent of the northern division of Indian agencies. Mr. Thompson chose the site for Fort Thompson. The Fort was an important stopping point on the stage route which started in Yankton, extended along the river through Pierre and on into other northern posts.
Today it houses a large casino that has boosted the economy of the local Native American Indian population in the area.
