Freeman Fishing Derby

This event is a fishing opportunity for ages 1-15 years. The location and bait are provided. Kids can learn how to bait a hook, cast a line, and hook a fish. Prizes will be awarded for the first fish caught in each species for all the above ages.

Freeman, South Dakota came by the name Freeman accidentally. When railroad officials were assigned the task of nailing the signs bearing the names of new towns to the depots, the name-boards of neighboring towns of Freeman and Menno were accidentally interchanged.

Thus the town of Freeman is named for an early settler of Menno, and Menno derives its name from the large settlement of German Mennonites at Freeman.

Today, Freeman still celebrates its rich German heritage with festivals, museums and gift shops.
