Gann Valley, South Dakota was founded in 1885 and named for an early settler, Herst Gann. The addition of the word Valley to Gann was due to the fact that the town sits in Crow Creek Valley.
Gann Valley is possibly the smallest county seat in South Dakota, with a population of less than 200 people. Several of the original buildings on Main Street are still standing and conducting business. Cattle and dry land farming is the basic industry in this area. There are several public hunting areas available and several locally-owned lodges to provide excellent pheasant and deer hunting opportunities.
