gettysburg south dakota

Gettysburg, South Dakota was named for the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania battlefield by a group of Union Civil War veterans who first settled here. Gettysburg, SD was founded in 1881 and platted in 1884 and is the county seat of Potter County.

Gettysburg has a wide trade area that serves the farmers, ranchers, and the Cheyenne Sioux Indian reservation population. The Cheyenne Agency, headquarters for the officials of the Cheyenne River Reservation, lies close by to Gettysburg. This large reservation covers parts of three counties.
Gettysburg is a friendly and thriving town on the Lewis and Clark Trail. For the history buffs, there is one interesting festival each year, the Civil War Festival. I can almost guarantee the Festival is the only one in the state. Gettysburg also has an interesting historical museum that is worth the stop. With the close proximity to the lakes and the many farms and ranches, the fishing and pheasant hunting is excellent.
