Groton, South Dakota was platted in 1881 when the railroads came through and was named for Groton, Mass.
Groton,SD lies in the midst of the James River Valley, which is one of the richest farming areas in the Middle West. Groton serves as a grain and implements market for this rich farm land area.
With new developments moving in and new homes being built, Groton,SD has successfully weathered the test of time and is a growing community. Each winter Groton puts on a carnival of ice skaters. This is the longest running amateur ice skating show in the United States.
