Hermosa, South Dakota is a town of many names. It was founded in 1886 by the Pioneer Town Site Company and was called Strater Post office. The name was later changed to Battle River Stage Station. The current name of Hermosa came from railroad workers for the “pretty lady” that ran one of the restaurants. The present name is Spanish for “beautiful”.
