Hermosa, South Dakota is a town of many names.  Hermosa was founded in 1886 by the Pioneer Town Site Company and was called Strater Post office.  This name was later changed to Battle River Stage Station.  The current name Hermosa came from railroad workers for the “pretty lady” that ran one of the restaurants.  Hermosa is Spanish for “beautiful”.  Today Hermosa is starting to grow in size due to the expansion of Rapid City in this direction.  Several new businesses have sprung up in the past few years along Highway 79 and new houses are being built.
