Hill City, South Dakota lies in a small valley completely surrounded by pine-clad mountains. Discovery of tin, gold, and copper brought Hill Citys first settlers in 1876.
Hill City was thought to have been so named because of its geographical position in the center of the Black Hills. Today, Hill City, SD is the Heart of the Hills recreational area. Hill City can be considered a tourist town located near Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park; but it also has a year round population that serves numerous residents in the Black Hills area. Some journalists have made the comment that Hill City, SD could become the Santa Fe of the Black Hills.
