Hoover, South Dakota was named for John Hoover, a popular cowboy of the vicinity who later became one of the most prominent ranchers of Hoover and Belle Fourche.
The area that Hoover, SD is located at is filled with old west history of Indian wars and battles fought for land dominance. The vast open plains of this area was the buffalos domain and even today only supports grass eating animals and those who live off these animals.
In 1910, during the homesteader boom, a store was opened and a post office was soon established and still exists today. Nothing has changed much, today this part of South Dakota is still cattle and hay country. The ranches are large but few and far between.
