The town of Hoover, South Dakota was named for John Hoover, a popular cowboy of the vicinity who later became one of the most prominent ranchers of Hoover and Belle Fourche.  In 1910, during the homesteader boom, a store was opened and the Hoover, SD post office was soon established.
