Howes, South Dakota was established in 1940 and named for the First Assistant Postmaster General, W.W. Howes, a native of South Dakota. Today, Howes, SD is a very small prairie town that supports the ranching community with a post office, convenience store and service station.
In this area of South Dakota, it is not unusual to see small herds of buffalo along the fence line. The South Dakota prairie might seem desolate but if you look closely you can see the wild life hawks, eagles, prairie dogs, coyotes, deer and the occasional buffalo herd.
