
Humboldt, South Dakota was originally settled by German immigrants in 1880 and named for a German explorer, Baron Alexander von Humboldt. The Humboldt post office was later established in 1890.
Today Humboldt, South Dakota is a small agricultural town serving the many farms in the surrounding area. A number of the residents do drive into Sioux Falls to work but prefer the small town atmosphere for a slower pace of living and raising their families. Humboldt is prime pheasant hunting country with all the corn fields in the area.
