
Mitchell, SD was first established in 1879 with the progress of the railroad westward. The town’s name was derived from Alexander Mitchell, president of the Milwaukee railroad. Mitchell lies approximately 60 miles west of Sioux Falls and is the first town on Interstate 90 of any size. Mitchell holds several unusual and interesting attractions and definitely is a town on your tour that you will want to devote several hours to sightseeing. Mitchell, South Dakota’s downtown is filled with unique and antique jewelers, gift shops, professional offices, eateries, and bars, all located inside three and four story storefronts. A must see here is the world’s only Corn Palace or better know almost the regulars as the world’s biggest bird-feeder.
