Kennebec, South Dakota was founded in 1905 and named by the Milwaukee railroad officials. After a heated election, Kennebec, SD won the county seat race against Presho and Oacoma.

Today Kennebec, SD holds a steady population due to being the county seat of Lyman County and the agricultural population around it. In the fall Kennebec's population more than doubles with the influx of pheasant hunters as the area is prime pheasant hunting country.

Kennebec has two motels, a campground, a gas station, a couple of restaurants and a grocery store. Kennebec provides a good place to pull off the Interstate for a rest stop.
