Lower Brule, South Dakota is located on the Lower Brule Indian Reservation and is the Tribal Headquarters. The name Brule is an Indian word meaning burned. Lower Brule was named in honor of many tribe members that were severely burned in a prairie fire.

Today Lower Brule's main business area is the Tribal Headquarters and a large Casino with a few shops providing food, lodging and gas. The population in Lower Brule is predominant Native Americans living in and around the town.
