Marion, South Dakota was situated at a junction of the railroad. Marion was laid out in 1879 and was first called Turner Junction. In 1881, Marion was renamed Marion Junction, for the daughter of a Milwaukee railroad official. In 1938, an act of the legislature shortened the name to its present form of Marion.
Today Marion, South Dakota is a small town with a large agricultural population susstaining the continued growth of Marion. Each Fall the population increases as the pheasant hunters descend on the acres of corn fields in the area.
