Martin was originally platted in 1912 with the opening of the Rosebud Reservation land and named in honor of the Congressman, Eben Martin. Martin only had a few business establishments that included the usual blacksmith shop, hardware store, livery barn, grocery store, and land office. A post office was added later with the mail being brought in by stagecoach. Today Martin is still a small town that caters to the ranchers and farmers in the area. There are several good eating places and convenience stores in town.
