Mobridge, South Dakota was formerly the site of Arikara and Sioux Indian villages, but it was not until 1906 that the present city was founded. At that time the Milwaukee R.R. built a bridge across the Missouri river, and when a telegrapher used the contraction “Mo. Bridge” in his reports a name originated that has remained with the town. As the division headquarters for the Pacific extension of the railroad, the town grew rapidly. Close to Mobridge is the remains of an Arikara Village site. Mounds are still visible. Several mounds were excavated by the Smithsonian Institution and the artifacts are on display in Washington, D.C. Mobridge is rich in Indian history and lore. On a high hill is the Sacajawea Monument, in honor of the Indian woman that accompanied Lewis and Clark.
