Mobridge, South Dakota was formerly the site of Arikara and other Sioux Indian villages. The present city wasn’t founded until 1906 when the Milwaukee R.R. built a bridge across the Missouri river. A telegrapher used the contraction “Mo. Bridge” in his reports and a name originated that has remained with the town to this day. Mobridge grew rapidly as the division headquarters for the Pacific extension of the railroad.

Mobridge, South Dakota is rich in Indian history and lore. Close by to Mobridge is the remains of an Arikara Village site, the mounds are still visible. Several of these mounds were excavated by the Smithsonian Institution and the artifacts are on display in Washington, D.C. Just outside of Mobridge on a high hill is the Sacajawea Monument, in honor of the Indian woman that accompanied Lewis and Clark.

Mobridge is located on Lake Oahe, a branch of the Missouri River, and one of the top walleye fishing areas in the nation. Several fishing tournaments are held each year along with Lewis and Clark Trail festivals.

The friendly town of Mobridge has locally owned restaurants and bars, campsites and lodging for the traveler looking for a rest stop along South Dakota's highways 83 and 12. The city slogan is “Make it Mobridge, South Dakota”, you most certainly want to do just that.
