Murdo, South Dakota was named for a pioneer cattleman, Murdo McKenzie. The cattleman was an early settler that ran upwards of 20,000 head of cattle on the western South Dakota ranges. Murdo, SD was actually founded in 1905 just prior to the arrival of the Milwaukee railroad.

Murdo, South Dakota is the largest town between Chamberlain and Rapid City offering a good stopping off place to rest, eat, and enjoy some of the sights available. Murdo has several large motels, restaurants, a truck stop, several convenience/gas stations and an antique car museum. Murdo, SD is approximately the midway point on SD Interstate 90 to the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore.
