Murdo, South Dakota is the largest town between Chamberlain and Rapid City and a good stopping off place to rest, eat, and enjoy some of the sights available. Murdo was named for a pioneer cattleman, Murdo McKenzie. The cattleman was an early settler that ran upwards of 20,000 head of cattle on the western South Dakota ranges. Murdo was actually founded in 1905 just prior to the arrival of the Milwaukee railroad.
