New Underwood, South Dakota is situated on Box Elder Creek, one of the many streams that drain from the Black Hills. New Underwood was named for a partner, Johnny Underwood, by a large landowner that donated a right-of-way across his land in 1906 to the railroad. Because there was already an Underwood at the time, the New was added.
Today much of the population of New Underwood, South Dakota is associated with the Ellsworth Air Force base and ranching concerns. There are several conveniences for the weary traveler such as restaurants, gas stations, grocery store and the smallest biker's bar in the world. If you are going to the Sturgis Rally or just sightseeing on your motorcycle, you might want to check this attraction out.
