Newell, South Dakota was founded in 1910 with the homestead rush that followed the railroads. Newell was named after the engineer on the reclamation project, F.H. Newell.

Newell, South Dakota is in the heart of the Government Reclamation Project, which brings water from the Belle Fourche Dam to irrigate the level areas lying along the Belle Fourche valley. Although Newell is in a dry section of the State, Newell is surrounded by farms where green vegetation stands out in striking contrast with the dun prairies beyond. Sugar beet production and sheep are the chief industries here and keep this small town alive and growing.
