Newton Hills, South Dakota was orginally homesteaded in the early 1800's by William Newton. Homesteaders quickly found that the Newton Hills area was too steep to farm and too rugged to clear. The area was abandoned as Canton started developing in the late 1800's. The thick forest area provides a quiet, shady campground, hiking trails and much more for year round enjoyment.
