Pierre, South Dakota is not only the county seat of Hughes County but also the State Capitol. Pierre was founded in 1878 and named Mato, but its close proximity to Fort Pierre caused the town to be referred to as “Pierre on the east side of the river, opposite Fort Pierre”, and the new name continued.
Pierre, South Dakota is the second smallest capital city in the United States, Bismarck, N.D. having the “honor” of being the smallest.
History abounds in Pierre, South Dakota as early settlement was in existence with the earliest fur traders, explorers, and settlers coming into the state.
Pierre, South Dakota is where the West-River rancher rubs elbows with East-River farmer, the business man, and the Government official, giving the town a rural and urban character all in one.
Pierre, South Dakota claims to be the only city on the Missouri River that owns the entire stretch of waterfront. This riverfront city property has been converted into beautiful parks. Pierre is a diverse community offering something for everyone, festivals, outdoor activities, world class museums, Lewis and Clark Center, fishing and boating in Lake Oahe and many many other activities. Come early and be prepared to stay for a day or two to see the State Capitol of South Dakota, you will be amazed.
