
Welcome to the home of the Oglala Sioux Indians. The home of the Oglala Sioux, Pine Ridge, is made up of 1,783,741 acres, second only to the Arizona’s Navajo Reservation. Sitting on the southern edge of the Badlands National Park, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is nearly as desolate as the Badlands. Pine Ridge is the largest town in Shannon County, which covers almost two-thirds of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Shannon County is ranked as the poorest county in the nation. There are several side trips off highway 18 that are well worth the time to relive history and enjoy some of the local fare. Three miles west of Kyle, on BIA Highway 2, Oglala Lakota College provides the areas only four-year accredited college. The bookstore provides a collection of Native American literature. The Red Cloud Indian Mission School is located a few miles north of Pine Ridge on Highway 18. Here you will find the Indian Art Show which consists of a collection of 300 works of art representing 30 different tribes. The Indian star quilts are exquisite, and its gift shop offers genuine bead and quill works at reasonable prices. If you are interested in a little entertainment and a good meal, stop at the Prairie Winds Casino for a few hours of slots and cards.
