Plankinton, South Dakota is another town named for a director of the railroad at the time it was plotted; John H. Plankinton, in 1880.
The honor of the first South Dakota “corn palace” belongs to Plankinton, not Mitchell. In 1891 a grain festival was held and a plain wooden structure’s exterior was covered with grains and grasses. The building and project was abandoned the following year leaving Mitchell as the only existing Corn Palace.

From Mitchell to Murdo each town along the Interstate 90 is prime pheasant hunting areas. The small communities triple in size each year in Mid October with pheasant hunters from all over the United States and Canada and Plankinton, South Dakota is not an exception.
