Red Elm, South Dakota was founded in 1910 when a branch of the Faith’s railroad line was built in the area and named for the Red Elm trees in the vicinity.

Today Red Elm, South Dakota is struggling to stay off the ghost town list with a population of one or two families still in the town. Better roads, faster automobiles, and larger towns in close vicinity have rung the death toll for Red Elm.
