Redfield, South Dakota is the largest town on US 212 between Watertown and the Black Hills.  Redfield was laid out by the North Western Railroad Company and named after a popular official of the railroad, J.B. Redfield. Originally named Stennet Junction in 1879, was selected as the county seat of Spink County, South Dakota. For some reason the county records were not moved from Old Ashton. In another election in 1884 there were more votes cast than there were people in the county. Redfield has the distinction of having had to take up arms in a struggle over the site of the county seat, a fight which began in 1880 and was not permanently settled until 1886.
