Redfield, South Dakota is the largest town on US 212 between Watertown and the Black Hills. Redfield was laid out by the North Western Railroad Company and named after a popular official of the railroad, J.B. Redfield.
Redfield, South Dakota was selected as the county seat of Spink County. For some reason the county records were not moved from Old Ashton and another election had to be held in 1884, where there were more votes cast than there were people in the county. Redfield has the distinction of having had to take up arms in a struggle over the site of the county seat, a fight which began in 1880 and was not permanently settled until 1886.
Today Redfield, South Dakota is a peaceful growing community in the middle of rich agricultural land and the heart of pheasant hunting country. Redfield claims to be "The Pheasant Capital of the World", based on the fact that the first successful stocking of pheasants in South Dakota occurred in Redfield in 1908.
For the history buffs, Redfield, South Dakota has a 1902 Carnegie Library, 1914 Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Depot, and the Spink County Museum, plus a walking tour of many homes placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
