Spearfish, South Dakota was founded in 1876 and named for the creek on which it is situated. Spearfish lies on both sides of Spearfish Creek, at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon. It is not an industrial town but an important tourist center, with tourism ranking high in the town’s activities. If trout fishing is a passion you will find the creeks brimming with rainbow trout and some of the best fishing in the area.
Today Spearfish, South Dakota is one of the fastest growing cities in the state due to the mild winter climate and beautiful scenery. Spearfish sets at the foot of the Black Hills and is just a short drive to the historic towns of Deadwood and Lead. Every accommodation is available from luxury hotels to quaint locally owned motels, cabins and bed & breakfast lodgings. There are restaurants available that would rival some of the large metropolitan cities.
Spearfish, South Dakota is definitely a town that you want to add to your itinerary. WARNING, you may fall in love and find yourself considering a retirement home or vacation cabin in the Canyon as so many others have done.
