Spearfish, South Dakota was founded in 1876, and named for the creek on which it is situated. Spearfish lies on both sides of Spearfish Creek, at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon. Spearfish is not an industrial town but an important tourist center. The tourist business ranks high in the town’s activities. Black Hills State College, a four year college, is located on a high hill on the western part of town.
