Sturgis, South Dakota was named for Maj. S.D. Sturgis, commander of the military post in 1878 when the site was laid out. Sturgis is the county seat of Meade County, the largest county in the South Dakota: its area exceeds the combined states of Rhode Island and Delaware. Due to the large amount of supplies required by the military post and gold miners, the early population of Sturgis was made up largely of bullwhackers and bull trains. History abounds in this area – Indian wars, gold rush days, wagon trains and settlers.
In early August each year the population of Sturgis, South Dakota multiples by the tens of thousands as the annual Sturgis motor cycle rally takes place. The numerous campsites and motels fill up quickly, so if you are planning a trip into the Sturgis area during the Rally week make your reservations in the early spring. The overflow of bikers fills the campsites in most of the cities in the Black Hills area.
