Wentworth, South Dakota was settled in 1876 by the George Wentworth family and was founded in 1879 and platted in 1881. The town was named Wentworth, SD in honor of the founding family.

Wentworth, SD is a small farming community that is within driving distance of a larger town, which is a factor in the declining population growth over the years. Today Wentworth, SD still has its grain elevators and several business places that serve the surrounding farming community.
