White River, South Dakota was one of the first white settlements and took place in 1911 and derived its name from the near-by river of the same name.  The river took its name from the milky color of its waters, due to the sediment carried down from the Badlands, which it drains.  Today White River is a picturesque small town with a strong Native American heritage on a highway that leads to the Badlands.
