Whitewood, South Dakota became a town with the advent of the C & N Railroad laying their track and opening a station in 1888. Whitewood’s name was derived from the extensive growth of aspen and birch trees in the vicinity.

Today, Whitewood, SD still remains an active part of the Black Hills community and has maintained a steady population growth with several businesses catering to the ranchers and tourist in the area. The growth of Spearfish in the past 25 years has spilled over into Whitewood with the large beautiful homes being built in the area.
