Whitewood, South Dakota became a town with the advent of the C & N Railroad laying their track in 1888. The name of Whitewood arrives from the extensive growth of Aspen and Birch trees in the vicinity. Whitewood still remains an active part of the Black Hills community and has maintained a steady population with several businesses catering to the ranchers and tourists.
