Winfred, South Dakota was founded in 1882 and named after an early settler’s daughter. Winfred is another South Dakota town that has slowly declined in population over the past seventy-five years. The reasons are the same all over the state; highways have been paved and larger cities in close proximity have lured the farm children into towns for work and recreation. The small main street of Winfred is almost deserted except for a café, bar, and church. Once upon a time, Winfred, SD had elevators, creameries, general stores, and lumber yards, but today Winfred is a town trying to stay off the ghost town list.
