Winner claims to be the internationally known “Hunter’s Paradise”. Hunters from around the world come here in pursuit of the wild ring-necked pheasants, grouse, prairie dogs and larger game. The land that Winner sits on was opened to homesteaders in 1909, three years prior to the railroad coming in. When the railroad came in it missed the original town site by two miles. The enterprising citizens saw there was only one solution to the dilemma and moved the town to the existing location. The name was changed from the original name of Lamro to Winner when after a bitter fight for the county seat, the new town won the location and was renamed “Winner”. Today, Winner is one of the busiest and largest trading points in the area along Highway 18.
