Worthing, South Dakota is one of the early settlement towns in this part of the state. Worthing was founded in 1879. Worthing was named by and for a Milwaukee railroad official named Worthington. The last three letters were dropped to shorten the name.

Worthing's growth has been stunted due to its proximity to Sioux Falls and Canton and remains a small town. A fertile agricultural region surrounds Worthing, South Dakota and most of the residents either cater to the farming community or work in Sioux Falls. The Worthing area is another great pheasant and game bird hunting areas to add to the hunter’s list.
