The Yankton Sioux Tribe’s reservation lies just 10 miles west of Wagner, on a hill overlooking the beautiful Missouri River. The reservation is a 36,561 acre reserve established in 1853. The southern boundaries are formed by the Missouri River; a portion was taken for the Fort Randall Dam. At the base of the dam stands the Fort Randall Historic Site. Fort Randall was a military outpost established in 1856 to maintain peace between the white settlers and the Sioux Indians. The only structure still standing today is the Fort Randall Chapel. Ft. Randall Casino is located right off highway 18 atop a large bluff overlooking the Missouri River. Many Indian Day celebration POW WOWS are held here during the summer months. Tours of the large Bison Herd are scheduled upon request. There is a tipi camp open in the summer. You are invited to stop by and tour the facilities and ask questions regarding the Sioux Indian heritage.
