Highway 44 starts on the eastern side of the state near the Minnesota border with miles of open farm land, winding down to the rolling bluffs along the Missouri River. The river bluffs merge into open prairie, home to some of the state's largest pheasant populations. Highway 44 continues across one of the state's largest Indian Reservations, Pine Ridge, and into the Badlands National Park. The highway actually ends in Rapid City where it merges with Highway 385 into the Black Hills.
