South Dakota Highway 44 starts on the eastern side of the state near the Minnesota border with miles of open farm land, winding down to the rolling bluffs along the Missouri River. The river bluffs of South Dakota Highway 44, merge into open prairie,and to some of the South Dakota's largest pheasant populations. South Dakota Highway 44 continues across one of the state's largest Indian Reservations, Pine Ridge. From the Pine Ridge reservation, Highway 44 skirts the outer edges of the Badlands National Park. South Dakota Highway 44 actually ends in Rapid City where it merges with SD State Highway 385.
